I don't really think that's a requirement, my only experience of 40k is playing a board game with Even around 20ish years ago.  :P

Yes you can, as long as you:

A) Have a different character concept that Rune's rogue psyker (shouldn't be hard since you're a sorcerer)

B) Take 5 minutes to learn what a Chaos sorcerer really is :-P

If you go for the sorcerer approach there are many possible backgrounds, but here are two ideas:

1. You're from the Eye of Terror - i.e. you grew up and learned your craft in a place where magic is no more uncommon or weird than a standard fantasy setting.
2. You're a normal human psyker that have taken up the dark arts.

Btw: The original plan was to run this game over at darkreign.org/forum

I got two players from there (who know 40k), but I'm hearing nothing from the site admin. That's the reason for the holdup.

Need some guys with real bullets and brawn, hairy chests and such - enough with the fluffy psycho chaps. Well I will probably revisit when the Marines start getting possessed and behave oddly  :-X
