Welcome to Twilightpeaks.net - Home of Ruins of Empire

Know, oh prince, that between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis
and the gleaming cities, and the years of the rise of the Sons of Aryas,
there was an Age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across
the world like blue mantles beneath the stars

— The Nemedian Chronicles

Thus begins The Phoenix on the Sword by Robert E. Howard, creator of the famous barbarian - Conan the Cimmerian. It was not the first story published by Howard, but Conan is his most enduring creation. He lives on in books, films, comics - he even has a MMORPG to his name! I've loved Conan since I was a kid. Just like I loved Tolkien from the first time I read The Hobbit. And just about anything else that smells of sci-fi or fantasy genre. Which of course over time evolved to include role-playing games. Starting with Dungeons & Dragons - way back in 1986 - and expanding from there. Oddly enough the enchantment never wore away - even as a man grown I continue to enjoy these things. And I sincerely hope that I will continue to do so until the end of time!

I don't know who YOU are or how you ended up here, oh traveler of the internet, but welcome you are to visit this, my little patch of the shining kingdoms spread across the never-ending world this is the imagination...

In a language more plain; Twilightpeaks.net is dedicated to the support of my gaming hobby in general and to the BIRTHRIGHT campaign setting in particular. Twilightpeaks.net is primarily intended as a gateway to my blogs, the community forum and a number of sub-domains, with each sub-domain being devoted to a specific theme (Ruins of Empire PbeM, Dark Heresy etc.).

The content of this website is free; but do feel free to make a donation if you'd like to support the site and continue to enjoy its contents in the future!

About

Nothing much to be found here...a little about me...a little about my gaming hobby...a little about this web-site...and a little about something and nothing. Stay clear if you don't want to read the musings of an old gamer with too much time on his hand (I'm not really that old, nor do I have too much time, but it sounded quite cool at the time). For more about anything and nothing you can check out my blog.

Come visit our community forum. This is where all the action is; here you can join the ongoing Birthright PebM or just read up on what is going on at the moment. Welcome!

Ruins of Empire

The Ruins of Empire (RoE) Play-by-e-Email (PBeM) campaign is based on the AD&D 2nd Edition BIRTHRIGHT game setting published by TSR in the mid-90s. It is an excellent setting that lends itself very well to PBeM play, since the game focuses on the players running entire baronies or kingdom-spanning organizations over a period of several years.

In the RoE PBeM each player runs a domain (either a country or an organization - a mighty temple for example) and the character leading that domain (called the regent). The main focus of the game is the struggle against other player and NPC domains, as each tries to improve its position at the expense of the others.

The original RoE game is no longer running; I DMed it with aid from my brother for 50 turns during the 2000-2007 period, and then handed the DM stick over to Alan (a very dedicated former player) who ran it for turns 51-53. Unfortunately Alan got ill and was not able to keep the game running. The original plan was to play through turn 60, and I'd really  would have liked to see that happen.

Now we have a new RoE game, however, they we're calling...RoE II! The game starts on turn 61, and represents a could-have-been situation if the original RoE game had continued running until the end. RoE II is scheduled to run for 20 turns (although that may be expanded upon), finishing at some point in 20something (real life that is). You can go directly to the RoE II forum using this link.

Atlas of Aebrynis

The Atlas of Aebrynis website is a resource for players and DMs who desire to know what lies beyond the shores of Cerilia; the original BIRTHRIGHT campaign setting did not detail any areas outside Cerilia. It did, however, leave a fair number of hints and some maps that stretched slightly beyond Cerilia.  We also have - courtesy of Rich Baker - a hand-drawn map of the continent of Aduria and a  number of unpublished articles, e-mails and interviews that touch upon these distant lands. The Atlas of Aebrynis takes that material and expands greatly upon it, giving not only several world-spanning maps, but also information about distant lands and continents. The material is strongly Anuirean in flavor - as if written by a scholar from the City of Anuire - as such those lands closest to Anuire and the old Empire are more detailed than lands distant from Cerilia.

The Atlas project is a never-ending journey. I detail new areas as time and inspiration permits. And sometimes I add new material to regions already covered. I have a vague hope that someday it will all be finished and presentable as a .pdf document, but if ever that happens it still years into the future. For now there is just a rough outline of the world and the distant continents, while the northern half of Old Aduria is pretty well covered. You can watch for updates in the Atlas section of the community forum or keep an eye on the TP.net development blog.

It  should be noted that - as with all my Birthright work - the Atlas assumes that a province is approximately 50 x 50 miles or 2.500 square miles (as opposed to the 30 x 30 miles/1.000 square miles of the original setting). I always felt Cerilia was too small for my "suspension of disbelief" so I changed the numbers a bit. For the casual visitor it should not matter much...but to a die-hard BR canonist it might be a problem - but not MY problem. The Atlas is for use 'as is' - more a source of inspiration than reference. Enjoy.

Draco Chronicles

The Draco Chronicles website is a resource and reference center for my Epic BIRTHRIGHT campaign. This pen-and-paper DnD v.3.5 game uses the Birthright world (expanded to include other parts of the world of Aebrynis as well) as a backdrop of a campaign of truly epic proportions. The campaign traces its roots back to 1997 and is showing now signs of dying of old age! So expect there to be infrequent and random updates. If you are looking for something that is very different yet very Birthright...have a look, you won't be disappointed.

The Draco campaign is somewhat special in that it has several tiers of play (long before DnD 4E made 'tier' a household word). From the top you have the Divine tier (rarely used) where Draco gets to interact with the other gods and fight the servants of the Shadow up in Heavens (i.e. the Outer Planes). Then there is the Epic-Imperial tier where Emperor Shaedan makes the big decisions and sometimes picks up his axe (or turns into a golden dragon) to set aright something no one else can fix. Then there is the Legendary-Realm tier, where Crown-Prince Moerdred engages in military campaign, diplomacy and espionage on a domain level, and also has quite a few adventures.

The Draco game is not something you can participate in - it is a P&P game, not a PbeM, so there is no use asking to join (unless you live in Trondheim, Norway). The site is mainly here for new players to read up on the background material (we frequently have players drop in for a few adventures), and as a refference for core players (some have trouble remembering every little detail of a 10+ year campaign; can't understand why). Beyond that I hope anyone looking at the site will find it an interesting read.

Dark Heresy

This one isn't Birthright related at all. Rather it is the campaign blog for my Dark Heresy campaign, called the Maiden of Golgenna. In addition to the actual campaign log you'll also find a lot of general background for the Warhammer 40K setting. Check it out if you're into the dark and distant future.
