Recognized military titles in Anuire
« on: March 19, 2012, 10:30:01 AM »
Just out of curiousity (and because I notice the Noble Titles thread has seen relatively heavy use), what are the recognized military ranks and titles in Anuire?

General? (Knight-)Captain? Sergeants?

Traditionally the following would be appropriate but the standing armies that Birthright tends to use require greater structure than history might allow for.

High Constable - ultimately considered responsible for all castles and garrisons.
Marshals - logistics men for the deployment of troops, often functionally generals.
Field- Marshal - traditionally the Marshal in charge of the operatons in the field, on campaign.
Captain - in charge of a military company
General - the officer in overall control of a campaign/province. You end up with Captain Generals and Lt. Generals too, but that is all tricky.

Early modern military titles might apply in the field but Ensign feel too napoleonic for my tastes.

Captain, Lieutenant, Ensign/Cornet, Sergeant, Corporal.

Duke of Ghieste,
Grand-Maester of the Highland/Overland Traders,
Viscount of Whyrthe.

The most important ranks are:

General - In charge of an army. Size may vary.
Commander - In charge of a detachment/division. I.e. multiple units, but not a big army.
Captain - In charge of a unit. Another rather fluid title. You could be captain of a company of 100 or a battalion of 500.

Other ranks:

Marshal - Supreme commander; generally the highest rank used. The regent of the HA is a HIGH Marshal, but that's just a variant. FIELD Marshal is a lower-ranking Marshal.
General variants - You could have lieutenant generals and whatnot to differentiate between junior and senior generals.
Lieutenant - Could be a junior officer with a sort of 'staff' function (adjutant) for a higher-ranking officer. Or he could be commanding something at the sub-unit level (like a company of 100) or be a captain's second in command.
Sergeant - A soldier that has risen to command. They assist company commanders with the day-to-day affairs of running an unit and do their bet to keep things together in combat.
Corporal - A squad leader.

Actual names of titles may vary.

The upper ranks are, obviously, dominated by the nobility. That's only natural! You won't find many commoner generals out there. Commanders could be commoners, but the armies of large Anuirean realms will tend toward scions. Again; obviously! Captains could be commoners, but unless their are one-of-a-kind they will never rise any further.
