Did they just slaughter 15 of your units?

Yeah... including 2 crack armsmen units at full (to my knowledge) strength... So much for warning the subcommanders, eh?  ::)

Well it wasn't all that bad after all. And you actually managed to save Ghieste paying too many of his mercs  ;D
I'm sure Diem will be pleased that you got his armsmen out of harms way.

I have wondered a bit on the use of E and B status units. Is this all that wise? I know that speed is a must but are E and B units worth much in a fight?

Wear - No effect
Exhausted - -2 to Attack and Morale (so pretty useful!)
Broken - -6 to Attack and Morale (pretty useless)

Wow, the only war participants from Ilien who hasn't been reported dead are the few pikemen who are PoW. They are held by Diemed because they sat down durring an assult.

To bad it wasnt the whole unit that was put in irons for treason.

Yeah, Boeruine goes in for slaughtering their captives - expect your men to fight to the death next time instead of waiting to be gutted like trussed rabbits once word gets out  :-\

Yeah, don't expect Boer's reputation to help him either; being a mass murderer of the peasantry is not a good rep to carry, and I know all about bad reps :)

I thought the fee for the mercs was agreed up front, and had to be paid in full no matter how many units were massacred? Otherwise it would be too tempting to order them to charge into the Spiderfell as a campaign drew to a close.

That is indeed the case Even. On no account would anyone ever refuse to pay a merc contract cos their mercs had underperformed. Oh no.

As I recall, the pay due must be paid, also for the mercs to restock and recruit new members to replace the fallen. I'd imagine the entire merc company rarely takes the field, their supports, offices and whatnot remains even if all soldiers in arms fall.

I am not talking about the unit.
I know the unit died.
But Diem arrested the few men from the unit that sat down during battle. And with a little luck they might yet survive the war....

I expect that you pay a chunk up-front, make ongoing payments, with a sweep up at the end - any noble who welched would risk never hiring again - and on a big enough contract would risk the mercs a) selling all his secrets to his enemeis and b) offering a good deel to any neighbour who would help them 'collect the debt'.

On the other side, mercs who desert, are completely useless, etc will find their employer renegotiating, refusing to pay etc - no noble would completely surrender their power by paying everything up front.  Quite likely the money is put in an escrow upfront, and then argued over later if one side underperforms.  There are bound to be banks, etc in the Imperial City who could perform the escrow role, and business would be fairly constant justifying independent trusted brokers to oversee the escrow...
