Take 20 is particularly useful specifically for that. For instance, this season I wanted to rule a holding, which required that I spend a fair amount of influence to bring me within shouting distance of success. If I rolled poorly, I could lose all that gold without any return for it, which wasn't acceptable. By Taking 20, though, I could guarantee the roll I needed (barring others using influence to block me, which I put a big offensive pool out to counter), ensuring that my money wouldn't be wasted. I don't use it so much for "I need a high roll" actions, as I do for ones that would be disastrous or incredibly wasteful if they failed due to poor rolling.
