Generic background:
Lector Severus is one of the few indigenous recruits trained before the Excommunication of the Chapter of the Relictors and their nearly utter destruction by the reviled Grey Knights. Nurtured, trained and elevated to the rank of a Space Marine, Lector Severus displayed early on his prowess and ability to read through the tactics and deceit of the enemies fought relentlessly by the Chapter, be they Imperium troops dispatched to harass the Chaos in the Eye of Terror sector or Chaos minions harassing the remnants of the Chapter.

Re-indoctrinated to revile the Imperium, misled into its ultimate oblivion and demise by the iniquity of the Inquisition, on the one hand, and the forces of the Warp and entropy on the other hand, the new companies of the Chapter, under the banner of Arketus Bardane, are now fighting to carve out an Imperium of their own requiring more than ever the gathering of Chaos artefacts that the surviving Conclave only can wield on both fronts. The fact that an increasingly sinister aura emanates from the Chaos-forged artefacts wielding members of the Conclave has yet to be registered by the fanatical followers of Arketus Bardane, that no-one outside of the Conclave has seen for years.

Arrival on Cadia:
The vast battlefield that Cadia has become has honed the appetite of the Conclave who eventually decided to scavenge the world-size battlefield for relics and artefacts. Around 30 Marines and Scouts were accordingly shipped in an unmarked Thunderhawk hidden in the flank of a Carrack-class transport. The landing went as uneventfully as possible until for some yet unexplained reason, the Thundehawk’s transponder switched from its neutral signature back to the old Relictor signal triggering the automated defences of Cadian land defences. About 5 Marines died in the catastrophic crash of the Thunderhawk while the survivors were greeted by the fire from Cadian troopers reinforced – to the utter rage of the Lector – by Grey Knights, resulting in the loss of another 5 Marines before Lector Severus managed to regroup his men and evade the pursuers.

Blinded by the hatred of the Chapter utter foes, the Lector and his men, have now a secondary mission to their initial quest – eliminating the Grey Knights detachment.

Stranded as they are in the middle of a field of ruins, the Marines follow with greedy eyes the downing of the voidship. The Lector consults with his second in command, Adorus Galrek, before silently ordering his men forward. The Lector winces as he hears the whirring of the armours of some of his men, which start by now to fall into disrepair.

Note: Lector is a new title created by the Conclave to replace the Imperium-tainted title of Captain. Most of the Lectors are now younger Marines trained and raised just before the Chapter's near destruction. Most of the newest recruits since did not benefit from the lost access to Terra's genetic enhancements and the Conclave is rumoured to have started using some Chaos-derived methods on the new recruits.

Gear:
Lexander Severus is equiped with the standard outfit of the Relictors, however due to the inititial scope of the mission the heraldic paint of the Relictors had been removed.

Lieutenant:
Adorus Galrek, also one the last Marines elevated before the Excommunication, would have been part of the 10th Company of Scouts should the Chapter had retained its initial strength. Alongside Lexander Severus and some others, he benefitted from the regroupment of the c. 300 surviving Marines into six half-sized companies. Nicknamed the "Seeker" he has significant theoretical knowledge of Chaos artefacts and he is more versed in under-hand dealings than his Lector, to whom he constantly obeyed, hitherto.

I think Lexander and his little warband look very promising indeed. The background and the campaign integration are both very nice. His stats are also well thought out; at Prowess 5, Warcraft 5 he's an accomplished warrior and soldier. With high cunning and decent subterfuge he can also expect to outwit and trick his opponents from time to time. As a leader and a Space Marine it is also quite appropriate to have a point in Interaction and Tech.

Good work!

The Seeing Tower of Silence

The “Seeing Tower of Silence” had been recovered almost accidentally by a Relictor scouting mission operating deep in the Eye of Terror sector. Of the whole squad who landed to investigate an anomaly emanating from the space hulk Sentorius, a long lost Black Ship, only Librarian Adlerus returned to the assault shuttle which carried him and his Brothers. Before being put to a merciful death by his brothers, Adlerus was seen trying to claw helplessly as if for air and mumbling curses which made shiver even his hardened brothers in arms. All the while his right arm could not be unclenched from the five feet high and two feet wide square shield that he had found in the horror-plagued bowels of the Sentorius.

The item was obviously Warp-tainted for his texture seemed to slightly pulse even though the whole shield appeared cast into a single piece of black mate material that no amount of analysis could ever name. When eventually taken off the corpse of Librarian Adlerus, the shield became a simple sheet of black material. Only when brought close to a forearm does the shield “grow” some black claws that seek to grasp the said forearm and only reluctantly does it ever release its bearer.

Another incident occurred when Librarian Orthas tried and the shield and suffered similar seizures and accesses of dementia as were witnessed in the last recorded moments of Librarian Adlerus. Eventually the Conclave decided to investigate carefully this artifact and eventually painstakingly discovered that apart from its unusual resilience to physical and energy-based ammo, the bearer of the artifact was completely cut-off from any psychic and warp-related fluctuations.

Nevertheless it is rumored that the bearer of the Tower of Silence is sometimes exposed to the faintest of whispers, only audible to him. It is also said that no one has ever heard the whispered words.  Another proven anomaly, for which no known explanation has been found, consists in the appearance from time to time of a tearful eye, visible at the center of the shield, as if through a crimson mist.  The Relictors have usually awarded the use of Tower of Silence for specific missions where the Brothers would be faced with Warp-wielders.

The Maleficent Orb

The "Maleficent Orb" was a jewel from the crown of lesser Daemon Prince, Sh’aazar Silken Eyes, a roaming plunderer defeated by Librarian Decario during the early days of the Black Crusade. The orb is a fist-sized dark and sickly crimson sphere from which emanates a sense of lurking evil perceptible even to the untrained mind. The orb is said to allow its bearer to tap into the very fabric of the Warp and to derive for a short while vastly enhanced, if somewhat unpredictable in nature, capabilities. For all the might offered the orb has hitherto only be used by Librarians in desperate situations, for the cost of every use is the corruption of a tiny part of the wielder’s soul, gnawed away by the force imprisoned within the orb. Traditionally the orb has been encrusted in Librarian’s hallowed armors with sliding thick blessed plating covering it when not in use and commanded by the mind of its bearer.

Before the departure for the Cadian mission, the Lector and the Locum Lector were ceremoniously presented with the two items released from the Conclave’s restricted armory. The Lector with the Seeing Tower of Silence and  the Locum Lector with the Maleficent Orb.

The Relictors Chapter and the Infested Marines (Infestus Astartes)

The Relictors have relentlessly pursued war against “Chaos and Corruption” (in their own words) through the acquisition, understanding and use of Chaos artifacts and relics. This has become even more fundamental since the Chapter’s excommunication and their exile in the territories of the Eye of Terror, where they have become increasingly reliant on “non-sanctioned” source of supply to sustain them.

As part of the experiments with and investigations on artifacts and even creatures encountered and fought off, some Astartes have become exposed the effects of the Warp. One could remember the fate of Brother Uldrimo, whose shape and form, in the last days of a “relic recovery mission” resembled the one of a human octopus where twenty-meters long twisted arms covered with bony spikes enabled him to withstand the assaults of a horde of mutants whilst his brothers embarked their Thunderhawk.

At the heart of the Chapter’s Doctrine stands the doctrine of Voluntary Relinquishment which translates the Relictors perception of themselves as the ultimate weapon to seek and defeat Chaos.

The difference with wanton renegade Marines and other betrayers of Mankind is to be found in the soul and mental resilience of these brothers who strenuously exert their will to ward off the Chaos whilst their lives are spent in using what perverted them for a greater good. Ultimately should such Astartes survive a mission and be repatriated, their life would be forfeit, with the greatest honours bestowed upon them by the Chapter, during the Ceremony of the Sacrificium Expiatorie.

Marines normally survive having limbs cut off as long as they receive adequate medical treatment.
