Introduction to Hogunmark
« on: January 19, 2011, 12:54:02 PM »
Hogunmark is the last bastion of Rjurik power. Beyond its border only enemies and monsters dwell. Hoogunmark is only barely civilized. Its sovereign rules from the fastness of Veikanger, deep within the forested interior. This fortified city is the prime bulwark against Hogunmark’s many enemies. To the west the Aald River valley is home to many lesser jarls, all firmly under the control of the Jarl of the Yngvis who rules from the city of Aaldvika. This fortified town is Hogunmark’s primary trade center and the only place connected to the rest of Cerilia by a proper Anuirean-built road. The Kings and Queens of Hogunmark are traditionally (but not always) of the Yngvi, meaning that this bloodline is by far the most prominent in the realm.

The reast of Hogunmark is largely dominated by four great nomadic tribes – the Gautrakka, the Halskorrik, the Jarnkappsel, and the Aegilsgaard. They heed no lords but their own leaders, but can be counted upon to help defend Hogunmark from outside aggression. Along the northern coast, relatively sheltered by the Roykenskapa, are some permanent settlements. The people who live here heed their local jarls, but despite no longer being nomadic they follow the old ways. It is a difficult life; in summer they enjoy the bounties of the sea and the taiga, but in winter there is little to do but wait and occasionally venture out on the sea to hunt seal.

Freila (Yngvi), Queen of Hogunmark: Female Rjurik; Fighter 6/Ranger 2; Vorynn, major, 38; CG. The middle-aged Queen Freila is well liked by her subjects, both the settled people and the tribes. She rules from her fortified ‘palace’ in Veikanger, but often leaves the capital to personally see to the affairs of her kingdom. To her sorrow the Queen was proclaimed barren by the druids at young age, and she has therefore never married.
Vaetild Hjarni, Jarl of Sehaka: Female Rjurik; Ranger 3; Basaïa, weak, 14. N. The youngest of the greater jarls Vaetild only recently took the mantle of leadership from her dead father when he fell in battle with the minions of the White Witch. The people of Sehaka and are generally quite pleased with their rulers.
Gunnbjorn Rolulf, Jarl of Sjaruud: Male Rjurik; Fighter 5; Vorynn, minor, 21; CN. Gunnbjorn is a vain and self-centred man. He has somehow managed to convince himself that he would make a fine king. The people of Sjaruud care little for their ruler and rather more about the weather and the bounties of river and taiga.
Kelda Yngvi, Jarl of Djaalfund: Female Rjurik; Rogue 5; Vorynn, minor, 29; N. Kelda is a blood relative of Queen Freila. She is married to Audun of the Jarvyll (MRj; Rng 7; Re, min, 25; N). The Jarvyll is an old bloodline, one that has been king many times, but has little influence these days. Kelda has borne Audun seven children. It is very likely the next sovereign of Hogunmark will be one of their children.

Leidolf Heimdjor, Jarl of Hjolgrun: Male Rjurik; Fighter 4/Rogue 2; Reynir, minor, 19; LN; Str 9; Dex 6; Con 8. The oldest of the greater jarls Leidolf no longer rides to battle, but rules from the comfort of his opulent longhouse. Since many years ago the Jarls of Hjolgrun have been sworn to the Yngvi.

Najlar, Hövding of the Gautrakka: Male Rjurik; Ranger 11; Masela, minor, 21; NG. These hardy travellers of the frozen tundra eke out a living where few others would contemplate settling. Their leader is Najlar, a man who is reckoned to be a man of great heart and boundless courage – tales of his many long journeys, such as the time when he paddled a kayak alone to Thaele, are widely circulated.

Sigmund, Hövding of the Halskorrik: Male Rjurik; Barbarian 12; Reynir, minor 23; N. The fierce and brave warriors of the Halskorrik spend their winters in Hogunmark, but travel to the realm of the White Witch every summer. Theirs is not an easy position. Sigmund is their leader, an old warrior that is as deadly as he is cunning.

Axel Tjarlhan, Hövding of the Jarnkasspel: Male Rjurik (Elfblood); Ranger 10; Basaïa, minor, 22; LG. Fey and insular, but not unfriendly, the Jarnkasspel inhabit central Hogunmark. There is a bit of fey blood in this tribe, particularly in the blooded Tjarlhan clan. The other tribes consider the Jarnkasspel a bit queer and largely leave them alone. Their leader is Axel, a brave warrior that knows much of the wild lands of Hogunmark like the back of his hand.

Gunnar, Hövding of the Aegilsgaard: Male Rjurik; Fighter 13; Vorynn, major, 38; LN. The Aegilsgarrd are noble defenders of Hogunmark’s eastern border. They are welcoming to visitors and support Queen Freila wholeheartedly. Their leader is Gunnar, one of the most fearsome fighters the northlands have ever produced.

Thorjak the Green, High Druid of Hogunmark: Male Rjurik; Druid 12; Reynir, major, 38; CG; Wis 19. Thorjak is in charge of the Emperald Spiral not only in Hogunmark, but also in adjacent areas. This wizened old druid spends his days in the deep forests of central Hogunmark, receiving visitors who have come to share in his legendary wisdom. More often than not they come away with riddles and innuendo, things that only comes to make sense much later in their lives.

Ulfdan Torvaldson, Laugsmester of Royal Lumber and Salvaging: Male Rjurik; Rogue 6; Vorynn, weak, 14; N. The old head of the Queen’s ‘royal guild’. He has spent all his life in the forests and wilds of Hogunmark, making deals with the tribes and foreigners alike, weaving together a network that has come to resemble a true guild. Recently something new was brought into the guild’s portfolio, namely ship-wreck salvaging and a little local trade connected to this enterprise. Ulfdan’s young and enterprising lieutenant is Vaktmester Ingdar Einarson (Male Rjurik; Rogue 4; Reynir, Minor, 17; CN). He oversees the maritime aspects of the guild from the Aaldvika guildhouse, leaving Ulfdan to focus on lumber and trade with the tribes  and jarls.

Njorna, the Queen’s Seer: Female Rjurik; Sorcerer 10; Vorynn, minor 27; CN. The Queen’s personal soothsayer is a figure of some importance at court. Her real power is that she has the ear of the Queen – and that she controls a great source network which she uses to keep the White Witch out of Hogunmark.
