Ahh... Well I am also caught in the trekkie-web now. The game has a easy understandable gaming surface, and can best be described as a mix between Eve Online (light) and Pirates of the Burning Sea. The later of those two is definitely the major influence: you have a ship, but also operate in away/boarding teams and the steering is very much PotBS-style.
One of the really nice features is the ability to create your own species more or less completely from scratch (has to be humanoid though, but that is an old trekkie-thing as well).
Also, over time you get several npc-officers under your control, and can even requisition new ones. I did that at a point - I simply had no use for a Ferengi on my ship (yeah I'm a racist, sue me
)
As you progress in "rank", they follow you, and you have complete say as to what skills and equipment they have. You can also change their looks and such if you don't want a bald chick, or would like less facial tentacles.
It'll most likely end up as a niche-game. From what I've tried so far, it doesn't have the same staying power to me, as WoW initially did. With that said, if it takes proper hold, there's enough trekkies in the world to keep it going for quite some time.
By the way, Tristan, if you want to contact me ingame, my handle is Khirildith (if you search on that, instead of character name, you'll find me, no matter what character I play.)
