REALM MAGIC — Domain Caster Level
« Reply #1 on: October 20, 2014, 08:57:11 AM »
Part the First:  Domain Caster Level

There are two types of domain caster level (DCL):—source caster level (SCL) and temple caster level (TCL).  Any domain, which controls, at minimum, a source {1}, has SCL; and any domain, which controls, at minimum, a temple {1}, has TCL.  A domain’s base SCL or TCL is dependent on the total number of source-holding or temple-holding (respectively) levels, which it controls, and upon the highest-level holding thereamongst, as per the following table, DOMAIN CASTER LEVEL I.

Progressive Spells

A domain with SCL or TCL has access to a minimum number of realm spells, as per the following table, DOMAIN CASTER LEVEL II:  spells acquired thus are known as progressive spells.  An appropriate number of progressive spells is immediately added to a domain’s list of available spells, when SCL or TCL increases; and an appropriate number of progressive spells is immediately removed from the list, when SCL or TCL decreases.  A domain with, both, SCL and TCL has two separate lists of available progressive spells.

For all domains with DCL, the acquisition of the first two progressive spells from zeroth to seventh level, as well as the acquisition of the first progressive spell from eighth to ninth level, is uniform.  The following two tables, DOMAIN CASTER LEVEL III and DOMAIN CASTER LEVEL IV, detail uniform acquisition of progressive spells for domains with SCL and TCL, respectively.  Other DCL-based progressive spells are domain-specific and, hence, may vary from one domain to the next.

Researched Spells

A domain can also acquire realm spells via spell research:  such spells are known as researched spells, and a domain may acquire any number of these assets.  A number of spell research actions equal to the level of the spell, which is being researched, must be taken successfully, in order to add it to a domain’s list of available spells (excepting zeroth-level spells, two of which may be acquired via one successful spell research action).

When DCL decreases, researched spells are not automatically lost; but they can be lost in other ways.

REALM MAGIC — Effective Domain Caster Level
« Reply #2 on: October 20, 2014, 08:57:56 AM »
Part the Second:  Effective Domain Caster Level

Whilst DCL is the basis of a domain’s ability to cast realm magic, realm spells can only be organised under the supervision of a character (such as a regent or a lieutenant) with an appropriate prζternatural proficiency:—divine spellcraft, in the case of divine (temple) spells, or primordial spellcraft, in the case of primordial (source) spells.  The supervising character plays a key and prominent role in the process; and his relevant spellcraft modifier is added to DCL, giving, in essence, an effective domain caster level (EDCL).

Domains have a number of available realm-spell slots for preparation, as per the following table, EFFECTIVE DOMAIN CASTER LEVEL I.  This number is based on EDCL.  However, should a domain not have access to a relevant holding of a level equal to (or greater than) a given spell level, then spells of that level may not be prepared, since they may not be cast.

Realm spells must be chosen during the preparation phase, without exception.  However, for realm spells with multiple versions, the precise version of a given spell is selected during the casting phase.
