Does the realm ruler know what troops exist in his realm? Those of vassals for instance? Somehow I don't think I'd need to spend an espionage action to learn what troops my vassal has at his disposal. I figure, sending an official, or several, or a whole unit to tour the domain and write down the numbers periodically :)

It was very frustrating never knowing what units were present in the realm when I was HA, I sure hope I don't have to live in ignorance as king now :D

hmm, and here was me figuring that any regent in the province would know whether or not it had 200+ armed thugs loyal armsmen wandering around it - I suppose that outsiders don't know what's inside the castle/abbey unless they go inside - which would leave the regent being able to display their troops if they wanted to or leave everyone else guessing.

maybe the vassal can use one action like espionage in order to try to conceal his units to his liege's knowledge...

All realms will start with a list of their vassal's armies, and any other major military formations garrisoned on their land.

But this list will not be updated right? From RoE1 it was my experience that one could ask nicely what units ones vassal (or liege) had, otherwise it was a question of using Espionage to find out ( or Diplomacy to ask somebody who might know).

That's correct. Ask nicely (most vassals will answer truthfully), scout with your own troops, or use espionage.

Or get a mage to do that for you. Easier, faster and you can always deny the action and blame the mage  :P

Everyone say: "Accurate intelligence"!

...and the best thing about it, is that it IS accurate (unless the mage is lying that is)

Hm... I suppose that's a possibility.

Is it customary in RoE that lieges keep their troops in their own provinces or in vassal provinces as well?

It would depend on the relationship between the liege and vassal. In some cases the vassal would expect the liege to help protect him, e.g. Tier being helped against the Spider. In other cases, where the vassal has more of an independent streak, such as with Bellamie, it would be more likely that the Liege stays out of the vassals way. In the end it will depend on what diplomatic agreement exists between the two parties.

Ok, but I should definitely be aware at game start as to what my relationship with each individual vassal is. I doubt I'd need special permits at each border crossing if my army happens to be marching, its my realm after all :D

It might just be that they don't agree it's your realm  ;)

Unless otherwise noted a liege will have Military access to his vassals' lands (but not vice versa).

In general, if the vassal controls his own CASTLE, he's expected to protect that province using his own troops. If the liege controls the castle, it's the liege's job. Roughly speaking.

Thanks for the clarification... <and what a refreshing change from the days when I had to send transfer applications in triplicate to move my units around  ;D>
