Gather and train a new army
« on: June 22, 2010, 10:45:18 PM »
How to gather and train a new army?

4 units newly recruited in 4 neighbouring provinces and one general of some skill

How to proceed? I assume they start being at whatever status I when recruited (Reserve(?), Garrison or Active)

I) Then 1 season to move them to same province to gather the army under the general?

II) Begin to train. Can not move or do anything else the seasons they train right (Improve unit)?

III) 3 season later 2 new units have been recruited in two neighbouring provinces to the one holding the army gathered. They repeat; spend one season to move and join the army and one season per training (improve unit order)

Or can the units as well train each in their seperate province and gather under general if they need to fight a war?

I believe you can improve units regardless of where they are (but it is a court action for each province unless you use a regent action: Wage war, in witch case it is a free action for each province)

If they need to go to war you can move them to a province and create a field army there, assigning any general you have available, and march them off to fight as a collected group.

Either I am right or I am about to learn something ^_^

So my timetable would be:

Season 1:
Wage war
Muster units A in provinces were I am able.

Season 2:
Wage war
Improve units A to 2xp
Muster units B in provinces where I am able.

Season 3:
Wage war
Improve units: A to 3xp, B to 2xp
Muster units C

Season 4:
Wage War
Improve units: A to 4xp, B to 3xp, C to 2xp
Muster units D

Continue mustering until you have enough units, then continue improving units until they have the desired level..... It will be expensive though, since improving units are on active service.

Season X
Move units to same province
Create field army
Move units off to war

Perhaps the best course of action would just be to train them to skilled and march them to battle to die or gain further experience?

It would be OK move the units a short distance AND improve them on the same turn. Let's call the movement part of training - soldiers can never march too much ;)

You can also train units in different locations, but that would require multiple IU actions and they would not benefit from say a supportive action taken by an experienced commander.

Can damaged units train? Can they recover and train same season? Or can they receive realm magic cure spells early in season and then train?

A unit must be in a nice location, relatively unharmed and must spend all (or almost all) of the turn training.

I would also assume that continued "wage war" actions in order to allow such massed training had better have a solid reason or your court might start getting upset.  :)

Matt, there is no downside to running Wage War continuously... Its just the name of the action that allows you to coordinate loads of military actions.

See for me there is an RP imperative - that continually running wage war actions means a very militaristic attitude to your domain. Yes it is a summary action for a load of military shennanigams if you want to do it that way but roleplay wise there, to my mind, should be consequences to running it when you are not actually at war.

I will be preparing for war. Besides Haelyn is the god for war so I guess it can be considered some kind of martial prayer  :)

Indeed, it is odd for the Aegis not to 'wage war' and train units - maintaining readiness for the inevitable conflict is practically its reason for being.  I haven't waged war every turn - but would expect my court to complain if I left the men idle for a prolonged period...
