: Turn #62
: X-Osoerde (Alan) March 16, 2009, 02:47:40 PM
Hello All,

Just a general reminder -- a the closing week of the turn you should be trying to start/complete any of the following:

Diplomacy - You will want all diplomacy items to be concluded by the end of week because the terms/tenets MUST go into your DO.  At this point, it is wise to contact those you have already made arranagement with and ensure that you and they are on the same page (for what is going into the DO tenets).

Interactive Adventures - Start them now or accept that they will be primarily DM Fiat.
Start them now or accept that they will be primarily DM Fiat.
Start them now or accept that they will be primarily DM Fiat.

Did you catch that?

Domain Order - Start Filling in your DO Now!  By filling out your DO now, you can begin to get a better idea of what you still need to do, and what resources you need to commit, etc.  Many veteran players at least have a DO outline, long before the turn ends, and it is often very helpful in framing the path towards your Domain Agendas.

Dispatches - Don't forget the power of a dispatch.  If you can't get a diplomatic arrangement filled out, then try using a dispatch.  They are awesomely powerful, and can at least buy you time to reach an appropiate arrangement.

I'd extend this even further. Write up your draft DO for the coming turn as soon as you've got your last turn returned. It makes it a lot easier to know how many actions and resources you have to play around with if you have already written down all the ones you 'have' to do. If you know you only have a few court actions to spare, you'll have to think harder about accepting to go on that Adventure somebody suggests to you.

Gosh no, why if I'd done that I wouldn't have had to trawl through a hundred emails and thread posts this morning to try and dredge out where I'd agreed what in time to submit today  :-\

Sigh, live and learn, I meant to keep track as I went along and forgot - more fool me  :-[

And don't try to do anything too clever at the last minute, make sure you have the basics covered, especally the concept of what you are trying to achieve - it is more important to have this kind of detail than it is lovely flavour text so that the DM's can see what you wanted to do. They might even feel kind if your sheet has a couple of errors on it but they can see what you needed to do. :)

I have mail pending to Bjørn before I can finish my DO. Mail sent some 5 hours ago so I realize I am a little late. However the possible requirement of a supporting adventure action to S&C was not planned by me and I want confirmation before I turn in my DO

Turn it in, as you would like it to be, today. They will review it and get back to you if you have to change it. Its better to deliver, than to not.

Done with the DO. Pending the wrath of the DMs should it turn out to be full of trash, I would say that it has been a bit less painful than last time. Call it the learning curve.

Between that and resume-polishing the Sunday is bust :)

My DO is 57 pages long...  ::)

I really hope the next couple of turns are less strenous. 3 years of this level of activity is a little daunting.  :)

Niels as DM I would kill your domain before 3 years have passed if for nothing else to lessen the burden of work ;-)

I have just mailed mine. I had problems with my Gmail sending due to connection. I used my alternate hotmail

I hope that's because there is a loooong block of very narrow (column-wise) treaty entries. It IS possible to include treaties below the boxes instead...

I've just added a section at the bottom of the DO, after the Notes section, marked Diplomatic Terms.

I merged my action and DM notes column to get more value out of the treaties, although I suppose it would have been easier to append at bottom...
: Re: Turn #62
: X-Ghieste & HOT/GH (Matt) March 23, 2009, 09:30:08 PM
Mine went into the action details below the action table. Seemed to work okay. Also used different font for them to differentiate.
: Re: Turn #62
: X-Elinie/RiD (Niels) March 23, 2009, 10:13:17 PM
Created new segment at the very bottom, for Treaties, To Be Ratified and Treaties, Active. Then made links between the treaty in the bottom and the corresponding action point in the list above.

This was doable by taking the Headline 3 and using inside the cell, this creates an anchor that can be linked to within the document. (I didn't know, so if it helps anyone else... :) )

Shaved 17 pages right off. Now its only 40!  :o
: Re: Turn #62
: X-Mhoried/Droene Kavarra (Iasonas) March 23, 2009, 10:15:48 PM
Mine is just 18 pages total. Which is quite a feat  ???

Needless to say, I will keep it simpler next time. Lesson learned ;)

Keep going on like this for two more turns, and you'll have a book to ship to an editor... :D

Not sure if it helps Bjorn/Jon, but I put a 3 part number x-ref in each 'action cell' - so the table cell just says what action, which province/realm, DDC - all the fluff is underneath.

Sigh, I still hit 24 though.  At least it should be easily skimmed - I may try cutting down the court and free action fluff, that's 9-10 actions none of which is very important - looking at it I put a page and a half on moving troops on a DC 5 which is possibly excessive...  I may cut out sections I don't use (ley lines, navy, holdings, other notes) that would cut it down a bit...

I'd personally like to put all actions at the top, at present regent+free+court+looey actions are all split up - a single table in order should reduce volume slightly...

I decided against pasting in 'Walking the Hills' which was my real introduction for Captain Raenwe - who I try and hire this season (modified DC 20, wish me luck) - at probably 10 pages or so I thought I might suffer divine vengeance so I just stuck in his NPC intro.

: Re: Turn #62

Well, given that 2 of my actions are well known anyway S&C, Vampires, I'm happy to mail you the relevant chunk of my DO as OOC knowledge - frankly #3 will be visible too so its hardly secret.  Remind me this evening if I haven't sent it over.

Edit:
Well, I cut out the juicy stuff, lots of little '<snip>' marks all over, but hopefully my DO should be coming over - my mail server had a fit though so let me know if it failed.

I'd also appreciate a copy of the new improved DO!

Ok, if anybody is showcasing its DO, I did an Excel version for T62. I am curious to read whether the DMs find it handy or not.
At least as a player it was very handy :)

I also did an excel version for T62, but it has a lot of bugs (especially considering the massive information found in the Regents' Handbook that has to be incorporated). I used it for reference, however if the DMs allow it, I will be able to produce a working copy for everyone next week.
: Re: Turn #62
: DM B March 26, 2009, 09:08:34 PM
I'm a huge Excel fan, and I was actually contemplating making an Excel DO before we started playing. Unfortunately the INSANE amount of work required for other things meant it had to be dropped.
: Re: Turn #62
: X-Haelyn's Aegis/RK (Andy) March 26, 2009, 11:02:35 PM
Hmm, an excel version would make x-ref's very easy - you could put each section on a separate page, or keep all the tables on page 1 and link to a different action on each page for fluff...

And of course pasting the P&H province line into another spreadsheet would be simple and help the DMs see who might be interested in your action.

I've dabbled in excel for ages, but am well behind most of you I'd guess - it took me a good day to figure out the P&H formula's.  So I'd be very interested in an excel DO.

I may play with revising the DO tables in word, ideally you'd get all the income and expense in one table, I thought it had to be pretty fixed so that Bjorn & Jon could find things quickly, but if it's open season...
: Re: Turn #62
: X-Tornilen/SM (Alexander) March 27, 2009, 01:01:55 AM
A question - there was a fair number of the actions that I did not know the DCs for, diplomacy actions. I hope you guys are large enough to not let us hurt ourselves with influence - if we could take 10 already.

Not a big issue in my case, I really need to boost that court expenditure (should have done it last turn, ended up spending enough gold on diplomacy that I could have boosted my court to... 9 GB :P).

On that note, is court expenditure one of those actions that take effect immediately? Like when you change status of units?
: Re: Turn #62
: X-Roesone/ARR (Robert) March 27, 2009, 01:05:06 AM
Your court cannot exceed your capital province level, in your case 5.
: Re: Turn #62
: X-Mhoried/Droene Kavarra (Iasonas) March 27, 2009, 01:09:29 AM
Excerpt from pg 91. Regent's Guide:

"Set Court expenditure

You change your court expenditure.

Difficulty: DDC 5 + new expenditure

Check: On successful check court expenditure changes to match the new level."

So since a check is needed, the effect takes place in the next turn.
: Re: Turn #62
: X-Tornilen/SM (Alexander) March 27, 2009, 01:23:20 AM
Hmm... but change status also has a ddc :P
: Re: Turn #62
: X-Roesone/ARR (Robert) March 27, 2009, 01:28:07 AM
And it too, takes effect the following turn. I.E. you retrieve your unit on reserve the turn after you've issued the order.

: Re: Turn #62
: X-Tornilen/SM (Alexander) March 27, 2009, 01:44:54 AM
Oops, in the specific case of reserve - active/garrison the post says the same thing as Robert. However, the change from active to garrison (or vice versa) is instantaneous... Which sets a precedent that some actions are instantaneous. I see nothing in the action description that implies it isn't, especially since before the action you used to be able to change it every turn.

Not arguing one way or the other really, just looking for a clarification.

The sheet looks nice however it seems to have problems with the GB cost for level on army units.

[Edit to add solution]
This can however be fixed by editing:
Tables E52-E59 to 0 0 0 0 1 1 2 2
And
Tables E44-E47 All to 0.5

I am having problems with the GB / RP choice for Army and Navy upkeep
I cant seem to change the choices that have already been made. And I can only choose GB where no choice have been made yet.

I can work around it by copy pasting cells with the correct form of payment but I am looking for a more viable fix... Can anyone help me? (Using OpenOffice.org 2.2)

Thanks I am looking forward to trying out the new version. ^_^

While all you other people are waiting for the new version you can update the one here to correctly show action expenses in gb by including this (+$'Court Actions'.D20) without the () to the formula in cell B15 in Main Info

(Reading mail now ^_^)

I guess we can always use non standard DO (like excel worksheet) to avoid making the same tedious calculations again and again ...

Of course the "official" turn submission has to be on the standard DO. Excel is possibly an excellent help tool.

No worries mate. I was in a rotten mood back then... ::)

Keep up the good work with the .xls sheet. It could end up replacing the doc version in the long run, but I believe the gist of what Bjørn is saying, is whatever you send in, make certain that you send in a standard version as well. Otherwise it becomes difficult to get a quick overview of the DO's, if they're in umpteen different versions.

One version for all. That doesn't mean you aren't allowed to lobby for an .xls version. Especially if it's able to do alot of the calculations itself  ;)

Don't do anything to hurt your back worse, Bjorn. :'(  Back injuries have a nasty tendency to not-quite-heal and leave weaknesses that'll turn up again further down the road to cause new injuries.  The less you stress it, the better.
