Diemed's March #62/63 (incl. Coere)
« on: March 27, 2009, 08:08:13 AM »
After crossing the Maesil, you are joined by a small contingent of Avanese cavalry (1 dragoon unit) that has recently been mustered (you can spot their freshness from across the river :-)

The first days of the march go well, and there is no sign of trouble, but as you near the border between Avarien and Niene your forward elements come under attack by cavalry forces of the enemy. There are some skirmishes, but nothing major. Unfortunately it will delay your advance.

IMPORTANT:

You've discussed various uses for your cavalry; if you are say, going to split it of your infantry and move it ahead, this it the time to give orders for it.

Kaven approaches Carvaloen.
"My Liege, have you considered my words on outriders, or a vanguard of sorts? If we form some or all our cavalry into a vanguard, and have the mercenary outriders locate the enemy, we could be rid of them quickly.

The Avaneese dragoons that just joined us, might have some knowledge of the surrounding land, even if they haven't seen that much combat before. They might be aware of geographical locations that would favour an ambush or the staging of a raid, against our troops.

I shall gladly ride at the front of such a unit, if you can spare me here, just as I feel certain that either Baron Arvour or either Ser Cereval Shaeme or Ser Tael Brosuine would be competent in such a regard. "

OOC: I'm posting this here, in the hopes that it will give a slight insight into the intricacies of the campaign stage. Basically the player(s) are given a few choices as to how they will use their troops for the coming few war moves.

OOC/IC: Since I’m getting little input I’m making this simple for you;

Pick one of the following:

1. Send all (or most) of the cavalry to Coere to find and destroy the enemy. This will tie up the cavalry; buy will be most effective in dealing with the enemy.
2. Send only some cavalry, most outriders, to screen the enemy. It won’t defeat them, but will prevent them from delaying the infantry’s advance AND will leave the rest of the cavalry free to do other things.
3. Completely ignore the enemy; he’s not blocking your advance (Coere isn’t on you axis of advance), just delaying movement. This risks cutting supply lines to Moere; but its not really a problem, as you can ship supplies from Ciliene across the Maesil instead. You take some damage from skirmishing, but not much.
4. Accept the delay and move into Coere in force; though the enemy has a good position there, he’s also trapped (or as good as, as long as Avan keep his castle and garrison in Daulton Active). Smaller groups might escape, but an army can’t cross the Seamists and retain cohesion.

As additional options you can decide:

a)       To send any excess cavalry ahead to join Avan and/or Zoest.
b)       Have the infantry force-march to reach the battlefield sooner; it might cause a bit of fatigue among the troops.

OOC Option 1.

Baron Roesoene is put in charge of a detatchment of 2500 Cavalry, with Ser Tael named his second, and dispatched to Coere

The detachment consists of:

2 units Crack mounted armsmen
4 units Veteran Dragoons
1 unit green dragoons (avanese)
2 units Veteran Outriders
1 unit green scouts

If they, through scouting, find the the enemy force in Coere too strong to defeat, they should resort to having the lighter cavalry screen instead.

The main infantry army, as well as the Duke's own knights, continue their stately march down the Maesil Valley (war move 10).

In the meantime Baron Roesone (and presumably his wife) take the cavalry and head towards Coere; the scouts and outriders quickly come under attack by the enemy's dragoons and are quickly routed; but once your own dragoons are brought to bear the enemy does his best to decline battle. A period of maneuvering takes place, as the enemy refuses to give battle, and Baron Roesone steadily reduces their maneuver space (war move 10).

War move 11:

Heavy rains set in, unusual in late summer, making movement slow and soldiers miserable...

The Baron's cavalry force should be able to force the numerically somewhat inferior Boers to battle if they continue their present course of action; what you could really use is some archers for whenever the final battle takes place. More scouts would also be advisable, since the ones you had died. But all in all things are well in hand.

No archers seem to be forthcoming from the Diem.

As you continue to push the enemy before you, their maneuver space becomes very small - they are boxed in by hills and mountains on two, soon three, sides. You had not expected this from the eldest Khaiarén...unless...unless he has some sort of fortified holding to fall back on...yes, that would enable him to hide inside high walls, against which your cavalry can do little...except guard against sallies.

It won't jeopardize your operations in any way, but it WILL prevent you from decisively dealing with the enemy.

Two units of Roesone archers are sent north to join the Baron, even as his offensive grinds to a halt as he finds that the enemy has occupied a fortified city and several key castles in the northern portion of Coere.

The archers arrive, and the Baron repositions his forces to contain the enemy, while he dispatches most of his cavalry to ride of to the north.

End war move 11.

War move 12:

The enemy does not make any attempt to break out; instead they keep sending out small bands during the night-time to strike at your pickets.

The Baron is certain they have help from the locals - and that the paladin, Moergan, is the leader of these raids.

With the cavalry dispatched to make a swing to the north and cross the mountains, Coere turns into a waiting game. The westerners continue to makes small forays, killing a few men here and there, and generally making life miserable. But other than that there is no action.

There are odd rumors coming out of Avanil and beyond - riders without colors that ride in the night, attacking indiscriminately. Haelyn's wrath unleashed in Coere. Roesone mercenaries fighting in the mountains. The Tuor garrison recalled. Bloodshed in Tuor's Hold.

What is this? No-one knows for sure...
