: A Facebook group for RoE
: X-DM Jon May 25, 2009, 03:45:44 PM
Hi all,

I'm considering creating a Facebook group for RoE. Mainly in order to easily send out messages like turn start and end dates, DO delivery and other status items.

What do you think? Would you be interested in joining?

it may sound crazy but I don't like social networks like Facebook.

In Italy, as in many other nations, FB has suddenly become a "must": everyone needs to have a profile on FB, everyone must contact old friend with FB....so I decided not to enter in this evil cycle :-[

for me it works very well the announcement from Bjorn and you in the forum

Yeah, but you're active. I'm trying to find some way of contacting the not so active players - and not have to chuck up a mail, find the applicable adresses etc. etc. every time someone doesn't respond.

Some form of automated service, like yahoo groups, but better!

Ah...alright....

I don't know if I fall into the "active" or the "not so active" group... (I feel active enough)

But I am not interested in joining a facebook group. I have no profile on facebook and plan to keep it so for as long as possible. (Forever ^_^)

ditto for me.

Jon since you think I'm active it means I'm quite reachable by you and Bjorn

People who write emails and check the forum once every so often are considered active.
People who don't aren't considered inactive, just hard to get hold of...

Even though I am on facebook, I don't see the need for another way of reaching players. If you ask me, it's the players responsibility to be available. If they don't bother to check the forums (or activate PM/thread forwarding to an email adress of their choice), that's their problem.

If they're not interested enough to check in once in a while, why are they playing at all?

DM's should spend their time moving the game forward, not trying to get a hold of players. Tell Bjørn to change from his government-employed hippie-outfit (now there's a contradiction) into his old army uniform and start excercising some discipline  ;D

Rune made some good points with his statement.

Unfortunately that kind of thinking had the side effect of loosing us players in RoE I. And I gather turning Bjørn into more of a grouch than what was good for him  ;)

Sometimes people need a nice push to remember they're a part of the game, RL can be a bitch. And I don't want Bjørn to start dealing with players going defunct - at all. I will deal with that. And since I consider this my job, I will make damn sure that not one player out there has not heard the call of the dragon. So when I do kick you from the game, it hasn't been for lack of trying to get you onboard.

Anyway, Facebook was just one way of doing it. I would like to revive something along the lines of the Yahoo group mailing list, because I like being triple certain that people know what's going on. Saves me alot of work.

But there must be something a lot better than Yahoo out there by now. Any ideas?

Jon,

why do you think people could get more involved if contacted via Facebook or some groups like Yahoo?
: Re: A Facebook group for RoE
: X-DM Jon May 25, 2009, 05:17:46 PM
Because it sends them an e-mail.

And instead of me doing all the work - which I do, you active players just don't receive them, it will be completely automatic. As soon as Bjørn knows the turn deadline, a notice will be sent to all involved players.

Actually the best thing would be if this forum could do stuff like that.

Now it's all clearer to me...

you're looking for a much easier device to conctact instantaneously all of us  ;)....try with a Scroll of Communication  ;D

if all DO is in on time then how big a problem do we have?

The problem that all DO's ain't on time  ::)

I abhor Facebook.

Facebook was just a suggestion because I use it myself for a lot of stuff.
But something like the old Yahoo group system is what I'm looking for.

 Any suggestions?

I received several "forum emails" from Bjørn in march at least, probably some later as well. So this forum has the neccesary functions to get emails out to all members without you having to look up all the emails. Am I missing something here? Can't you just edit the profiles of those who needs a push so that you are certain they receive these emails?

Bjørn is such a dear when he's angry  ;D

Anyway, between using that and my e-mail. My e-mail is quite adequate.

For what it's worth (not much) I think FB and yahoo are fine ALTERNATIVE methods of communication.  I agree with Jon that RL can sometimes be a real bitch, so having something else as a backup reminder that people can opt in (or opt out) of, is probably a good thing.

Try setting something up, make it clear it is only a backup form of notification, and let people choose to opt in, and allow them to opt out.  No harm, no foul.  Just my 2 cents.

I use Facebook once per week. I visit these Forums once per day. From my point of view there is no need for a FB group, but I guess we could try it and see what happens  ::)

Get people's phone number and give them a call. Or turn up at their door. The latter is probably more effective, but Skype is a lot cheaper than even Ryanair can manage.

Go Facebook!

I'm in; I'm rarely on FB anymore...maybe this will help? Not likely...

Ryanair.  Sending a grumpy Even would be kinda amusing...

Do you think Ryanair would sponsor Even's housecalls if we started advertising for them?

I'm on facebook, I rarely check it as I'm on for work reasons only, but it mails me if someone sends me a message.

I try to check the forum every evening though, so beyond minor details like getting the day/week/month wrong every now and then should get my DO in on time.

I'm on FB; just search for Bjørn Sørgjerd and you'll find me.

Is it Bjørn E. Sørgjerd or Bjørn Harald Sørgjerd thats you? (or neither?)

Hmmm... With the power readily available to Bjørn as DM, doesn't this kinda compare to befriending a diety? Or the Pope (who by the way will be joining facebook soon)?

I'm one of the harder-to-get folks lately ;)

Anyway, I'm in for a facebook group. I'm one of those who actually like facebook, cause it's the best online community out there these days.
Oh and the fact that I am in the process of making a Facebook game these days ofc ;)

If anyone want to befriend me, just search for Ronny Anderssen and you'll most certainly find me.
