: Very busy period - elections, RL rebellion.
: X-Roesone/ARR (Robert) May 07, 2009, 06:19:57 PM
I'm running for mayor of my town (my chances are slim but what the heck :) ) and with the elections a little over a week away (17th) the campaign is in full swing. I did a TV presentation yesterday, I'm setting up posters, distributing pamphlets constantly, I have a radio show on Sunday, a debate on Tuesday, a town market "meet the people" thing on Saturday.....

And atop all that our students (I teach at a uni) are in a country wide revolt, blockading classes and university buildings demanding free education (abolishing of tuition fees), which requires me to be in constant contact with uni staff as we have to be prepared to react to whatever happens as it happens.

Basically, I'm very limited with my time until the 17th and I've this big wedding to organize in Roesone, a potential rebellion as well (if I read the SR correctly  :P) and many players wanting to do diplomacy.

I'd be grateful if you guys would cut me some slack until this all blows over :)

That I'm not making this up you can see in my promo videos for the election  ;D

Very low prosperity in your town...need to agitate...

Can I move to your town, and then vote for you  ::)

Hehe.. I'm agitating all right. We're handing out free coffee this Saturday :)

As for your second question, well, you can move but you have to be a citizen and resident for six months before you can vote.

You need to remind those students that even with Administration checks, someone's got to pay the Upkeep on that University!

And spend my days lounging near the Med? You fix me up with one of those run-down houses and I'm your man!

Hmm, it shows what a difference having a clue of the language made, I saw the azure skies, golden beaches, luscious plant-life and thought it would make a great vacation spot (aside from the dearth of cuties in bikini's).  OK so the second video had a grotty youthclub and the odd rain cloud but I'm English, those just indicate verisimilitude  :D

Good luck Robert, if you get to be mayor, solve your colleague's problems by bringing back indentured servitude for the students that can't pay in cash...   ::)

Good luck man, just leave it to you dear wife to handle the problems until you have time. I'll talk to those grumpy nobles for you.

Now where did I put my sword... ;)

Robert I believe you and I better start speaking as soon as you have the time to do so once again. I'll make sure I have time to delve into any emails from you from May 17th.

Unfortunately I'll most likely be offline from noon May 22th to late evening May 24th  :o

So any stuff we are to do should be done between may 17th and May 21st

Good Luck with the elections!

Thanks! :)

A note to all those who have sent me emails so far. I'll reply as soon as I can. With only 4 days till the elections its crazy over here.

I've been in a debate yesterday (and people say I've beaten everyone except the mayor), today we have a rally .... so you can imagine how draining all that is on time and willpower.

P.S. and no, I'm not deluding myself, I won't win, but we might do well enough to win enough seats in city halls to make a difference and to pave the way for my mayorial ascension 4 years from now  8)

And today I've had my first first hand experience with biased media....

The local papers manipulated the report from the debate to such a degree that I barely even figured (which I can understand since they chose to concentrate on the mayor and the top contender), but they left out the part where some of the candidates and I literally humiliated the "leader of the opposition" protecting him and making him appear.... smart.

Independent and unbiased media.... right.

You do know that if any of us tips the media to how you run your Barony here in RoE, there is no way you'll win the election right?

Picking up sleezy untrustworthy women, picking fights with mentally ill patients, having personal vendettas against competitors, showing signs of mental illness yourself, etc. etc. Tsk tsk...

:D

Saw the videos!   ... Didn't understand a word though (sorry), but loved the "cheering"!

Best wishes and good luck in your campaign to make your part of the world a better place.  :)

Tnx, I'm trying but I'm being sabotaged at every turn.

Today, the incumbent mayor's press conference was published in the papers in which he literally stole my lines from the debate, the same lines the papers censored yesterday so now he gets "bragging rights" on "some very innovative notions on the theory of politics, how we should not think ideologically when it comes to local politics, but should instead think "project-ly" and concentrate on what we can achieve in practice..

Sigh.... depressing.

Wow.... not only is politics a whore (as the saying goes in my language) but I get to learn it from first hand experience.

Election day... a little over an hour until the ballots close. Then we'll know if "living among the drow" was worth anything. Its been a heck of an experience in any case, stressful, yes, but also satisfying in a way :)

I'll let you know how things ended after we all sober up from the celebration/grief party :)

Hmm, I'm still stuck on the 'living among the drow' comment - it can be read so many ways given the rather dubious artwork often on display in drow books... scheming treacherous scum who would sell their father for a new hat, or half-naked whip wielding fetishists with a fondness for the esoteric.  Either way their politics sounds even more interesting than our lot who recently went from 'drab' to 'grubby'.

Some party eh?

I'll be without net May 22nd to May 24th

If you want to discuss how to prevent the open rebelion with your statefaith you should start real soon

Yo everyone.... Sorry I've been absent, but if I though the elections themselves were a hassle, the "post-" period is even worse.

Basically, I got 8% of the votes and ended up 4th out of 6. Taking into account mine and my party's relative anonymity and the media blockade I'm satisfied with the result. We got 10.5% for city council and our two councilors (two buddies of mine) are now the swing vote between the incumbent independent mayor + right wing (8) vs left wing (9).

We're in a very tough position and pressured from all sides... we're talking two major national parties, left and right, demanding we submit. The mayor and the left challenger are going to round two, and they both want our support.

We're resisting, but I've been in several 3-4 hour meetings (being vice president of the branch) these last two days and I'm spent, drained, stressed and mad...

I'll get to replying to emails first thing tomorrow morning... unless I get called into an emergency meeting which, I hope won't happen since.

And now... sleep....must sleep

Sounds stressful man, but good that you're willing to do the work. The world needs reasonable people in politics.

Just take your time, RoE will be here when you find time for it :)

But yea, he seems nice enough.

I know I've said I'd come back after the 17th but things happened that turned everything upside down. The piranha life of politics screwed me over a lot. Being the swing vote is not all fun since the more experienced parties take this very very seriously.

We've been receiving veiled carrots... but also sticks. I can't put anything in writing now but it hasn't been all fun and games and its gotten very very uncomfortable for some of us. I think I'll be able to submit my DO on Monday, but I'll be gone for the weekend and unable to send IC mails.

I apologize for this and I remain committed to the game, but RL is pretty damn messed up lately :(

I feel pretty certain Robert could do with a couple of bonus actions himself. It's either that or use his Wage War regent action.  ;D

Don't worry, Robert, I'll keep my eyes on the little Bellamie while you're too busy. Not that I have much time myself, but someone needs to keep that guy under control. Just make sure you're back in action by the time I piss Osoer off :)

Hi everyone...

Its over... finally. Round 2 of the elections just ended and the candidate we were rooting for lost :( I've spent all of my time and energy these last few days lobbying, organizing, planning, talking... and alas, 57% of the voters thought otherwise. That's democracy.

Things will probably not be good, fine and dandy for me, my friends, the various organizations we are members of etc. but we'll have to learn to live with it... for the next 4 years at least.

I see many emails in my inbox, emails I cannot respond to as I'm leaving for Finland for a week's break with my fiancee who's been very supportive and tolerant of my political life these last few months :)  We'll spend a week in Helsinki and attent a metal festival next sunday. I'll be back June 8th and will resume my RoE activities without any further RL impediments, now that election hell is over. (Unless I get evicted from my home hehe)

Sorry again to everyone whose turns suffered on my account.. most notably Alexander and Kasper. I hope I'll be able to make it up to you guys later. I trust Jon to concoct something for my character as he knows me well and I've left some, albeit sketchy instructions.

Robert that is allright. It is a good thing someone care enough to try participate in the democracy on the level you just did.

For you and your city I am sorry you didn't win.

For RoE and IHH especially I am selfish and glad you will be back for turn 64.

Enjoy your trip to Helsinki  :)
